Are you always getting back from vacation with hardly any photos of
yourself? You can’t be bothered to carry a tripod around? Or maybe you
don’t like to ask strangers to take pictures of you?
There is an easy way to take great photos of yourself. Simply hold out your camera in front of you and point it at you.
Put something interesting in the background and you are done.
“But I don’t have a pivoting rotating screen to compose the picture with!”
Neither do I, but I can get decent photos all the time with this
method. Obviously, you may have to take multiple photos to get the
framing right, but hey, that is the advantage of digital. Of course if
you are using film, you may want to find a better solution than burning
that much film.
Holding out your left hand is much easier, because the shutter is on
the right side of the camera, so on the left side when the camera is
looking at you. If you hold out your right hand, you will have to get
your finger all the way to the other side of the camera.
Of course, because you have your arm extended out, camera shake can
be more of a concern than usual. I have found it most stable to place
the grip of the camera in my palm and to press the shutter with my
thumb. Using my index finger on the trigger makes my hand shake too
much.
Important! Since the grip on the camera is not the best in this
situation, I always wrap the camera strap one or two times around my
wrist. This way, if I lose my grip on the camera, it does not crash test
itself on the ground. If you hold the camera like this, take care to
prevent any possible camera damage.
I have used this technique with 35mm and 28mm focal length equivalent
cameras and found it to be quite easy to get the shot I wanted. If you
are using a much longer focal length, you may find it hard to get
yourself in the picture. Conversely, if you are using a much shorter
focal length, you may end up with your arm in the picture.
Try it the next time you are alone, you can get some great photos of yourself, and remember, practice makes perfect.
